As the days are getting shorter and cooler, it’s time to spread a little love and warmth where we can. Do you feel an urge to give back to the community but need a change from the usual English volunteer activities? Fear not! MAJET is excited to bring you a new volunteer opportunity where you can showcase your musical talents. Even if you feel like you are lacking in this area, join us anyway. The residents at Tano Care Home would love to meet you.
Join us on 3 December for a chance to sing and chat with some of the residents at the Tano Care Home. It is a small home for the elderly in Miyazaki City, with approximately 30 people living and working there. One of the of the residents is 99 years old. Yes, you read correctly….99 years old!
For those of you who cringe at the thought of singing in front of others or get a little tongue tied having to speak Japanese, perhaps making Christmas tree origami is more your thing. Join Tam on the evening of 2 December to make some origami which will be presented to the residents at the Care Home the next day.
We would love to see you all at the care home, but unfortunately it is a small space so we have to limit the number of people who join. Ideally we would love to get between 10 and 15 people to join us, so don’t waste time and sign up now!
For more information on the Tano Care Home please visit their website (Japanese only).

Ways to help
Singing
Share your musical talents with the locals by performing for them. Christmas songs and other songs are welcome!
- Solo/duet performances (we have about 20 minutes for these performances) – You can choose any song(s). A wide variety of music is welcome.
- Group performance (about 20 minutes)- Christmas songs and other popular songs. Don’t be afraid to harmonize! The songs that we will sing will be shared with you at a later date so you can practice at home.
If you wish to participate in the group performance and would like to practice together before the event (definitely encouraged), meet at Tam’s (map) at 12PM on the 3rd. We will make our way to Tano at 1PM.
Chatting
Singing can be quite exhausting and so we will have a short break (about 10 minutes) between the solo/duet and group performances. During this time, feel free to walk around and chat to the residents or give them some origami gifts. Remember that you might have difficulty understanding some of them or they might not understand you. Be patient and smile. This doesn’t happen often so even if you just give them a friendly smile it’s enough.
Crafts
If you can’t join us on Sunday, or if you want to help out even more, join Tam on 2 December to make some Christmas origami trees to give to the residents. Even if you can’t come on Sunday, it’s a nice gesture and we are sure that it will brighten their day. We’ll meet at Tam’s apartment (map) at 6PM.
Fine Print:
You must fill out a Google RSVP form by 25 November. We need to let the Care Home people know how many volunteers we will have the week before, so unfortunately we won’t be able to count your RSVP if it is after 25 November. Friends are welcome to attend to so encourage them to fill out a form before it is too late!
