Ocotanpeko Coffee Shop (コーヒーショップ オコタンペコ)
The biggest perk about this place are the lovely owners. Sit at the counter if you’d like to chat! They have great chicken Nanban, and a long list of pastas and other typical café dishes.

KoroKoro Cafe (コロコロ)
This family run café is furnished with natural wooden furniture (made by the owner), that, combined with the soft jazz usually on in the background, makes it incredibly cozy. They make a great オムライス(Omurice) and have a long list of coffee drinks including Espresso from Illy coffee for those who like it strong, and a nice foamy Honey Latte for those who like it sweet.

San Marco (さんまるこ亭)
A small tonkatsu restaurant on route 221 heading toward Takaharu. All you can eat rice, miso soup, and pickles with your meal. They feature a variety of katsu dishes and set meals. Their pickles and salad dressing alone are reason enough for a visit.

Joyfull
These Japanese favourite family restaurants have two franchises in Kobayashi. The first is in Tsutsumi, open 24 hours at the intersection of route 221 and 268, while the other is in Nishimachi, open till about 2am on 221 heading toward Ebino on the right.
Taimu (map)
Another family restaurant (next to Nafco). Taimu has an Internet link for you to sit and work. Last order is at 10:45pm. The have all sorts of food from ramen to yakiniku.
People
A small pizza place very close to Kobayashi station. You’ll quite often find it’s full of school kids but they have pretty good pizza.
Madoka / Haikaratei / Famiriya (map)
This place is actually one restaurant with three names. Go figure. It’s the only Kaiten Sushi place in town (sushi bar/ sushi train). Also has Yakiniku and traditional Japanese meals. It’s next to Toyota Netz on the right when heading toward Takaharu on 221.
Pasta Pasta (map)
Good pasta here, too, and what would you expect with a name like that. It’s on the left heading toward Miyazaki on 268 next to Uniqlo. Open for lunch between 11am-3pm, and then again for dinner at 6pm-10pm. Closed on Thursdays.
Kyōmin Ramen (map)
As you’d expect they mainly sell ramen but a good range of other stuff too. Prices start at around 400円. It’s located on 221 about 200m up from Joyfull in Tsutsumi.Only open for lunch from 11am-2pm.
Kokoichiban Curry
Kokoichiban is a curry house (totally non-smoking) with heaps of different curries. You can choose how much rice you want, what sauce base and toppings with all the prices clearly written on the menu. On the right on route 221 heading toward Takaharu.
Hotto Motto
A Japanese takeaway store that is relatively cheap. There are two, both are on route 221. One in Tsutsumi (map) almost next to Kyōmin Ramen and the other near Nakamachi (map) on the right hand side heading towards Ebino about one kilometer from the Tsutsumi Joyfull.
Yuki (map)
It’s on the left hand side of the bypass heading towards Ebino about 700m from the Tsutsumi Joyfull. Good food, not too expensive and a pretty good view of the city.
Tsutsumi Tei (map)
All you can eat Yakiniku. Just past the Family Mart on the right heading towards Takaharu on route 221.
Nojirikopia Restaurant (map)
Delicious food. It’s about 900円 for a full buffet meal that is vegetarian friendly. It’s a good 15 minutes drive out of Kobayashi City heading toward Miyazaki City on 268. Look for the frog statues and dome on your right; you can’t miss it.
Megumiya (map)
An Izakaya where the prices are pretty cheap but the portions are a little small. A good place to eat with groups as it’s ideal to order many dishes and share. Next to Kyōmin Ramen.
Suki Murando Horse and Dolphin Farm (すきむらんど)
Contrary to the name, there are no horses or dolphins here. Instead, you’ll find a quaint little art gallery with 3 annexes: craft, photography, and art. In addition to the gallery, you’ll find an unagi restaurant, a hiking trail, an onsen, and even summer canoe rentals!
