Summer festivals, called Roggaddo(六月灯), are a tradition in the Miyakonojo Basin, passed down through the Sasuma clan. Of these festivals the largest is called Okage Matsuri and is hosted at the Kanbashira Shrine. Held over 2 nights in early July, the festival consists of a parade of beautiful ornate floats pushed through Miyakonojo City as the omikoshi (お神輿, ‘portable shrines’) are carried to Kanbashira Shrine. At the shrine, there are food stalls and merriment, followed by fireworks.
