Nightly Yokagura in Takachiho

YokaguraDance

Every evening of the year between 8 – 9pm, the Takachiho Yokagura Preservation Society performs excerpts from the traditional yokagura (夜神楽) dance performances at Takachiho Shrine. The theatrical performances are taught from generation to generation and use amazing costumes and masks that have been passed down in this long tradition as well. The full traditional yokagura, done in the fall, is comprised of 33 dances performed overnight. The yokagura asks for good harvests and tells the story of the Shinto God.
