2016 Miyazaki Amazing Race – Call for Volunteers!

Amazing Race Header

Hello fellow Miyazakians!

We are proud to announce the Fifth Annual Amazing Race! It will be held on Saturday, April 16th in Miyazaki City this year, so mark your calendars!  We are also excited to announce this year’s theme: video games!

The Amazing Race was started by a group of ambitious JETs who came together to create an event that would combine the knowledge and intellect of both English and Japanese speakers by combining Japanese culture and a yearly theme. It’s an exhilarating event that has people from Miyazaki (and even Kumamoto, Oita, and Kagoshima!) racing around the city for the chance to win fabulous prizes, serious bragging rights, and just have an awesome time!

Foreigners and locals team up to complete themed challenges around Miyazaki City just like on the TV show. It takes a lot of planning and creativity to make it fun for all, so we are looking for as many people as we can to help out!

We are looking for 25 volunteers at this time. Please note that volunteering to help means that you cannot participate in the race as a contestant.

The volunteers will be divided up into Planning Volunteers and Day-Of Volunteers. If you are interested, you can volunteer for one or both positions.

Planning Volunteers will be the masterminds behind the event. We are looking for creative and energetic individuals to help us develop everything from challenges and tasks to artwork, designs, and even props! The time commitment for those in the planning group will span for the weeks leading up to the race and can be very flexible depending on what you are able to manage. Even if you only have a little bit of time to give but still want to help, that’s absolutely ok!

Day-Of Volunteers will be the ones running the show on the day of the race, operating stations and ensuring that the contestants are completing their tasks. The race is anticipated to run from 09:00 to 17:00 with morning/afternoon shifts to choose from. As part of our friendship with the Miyazaki International Center, there is a possibility of earning daikyuu if you volunteer the day of the race. (However, it is ultimately up to your schools to decide if they will give you daikyuu or not.)

Volunteer Now!

If you would like to volunteer, please fill out this google form by Sunday, January 31st.

Remember, volunteering means that you will not be able to participate in the race, so please consider carefully before making your decision.

Cake, and grief counseling, will be available at the conclusion of the test,

Your humble MAJET Team

The Amazing Race – One does not simply walk through Miyazaki

The time has finally come for the Fourth Annual Amazing Race Miyazaki! This is one of our biggest events of the year. Some of you may already be familiar with the American TV show, The Amazing Race. The Amazing Race Miyazaki is loosely based around this televised competition, except that teams will follow clues which will take them to different “Quests” within the boundaries of Miyazaki City. This year, each Quest and their Clues are inspired by J.R.R. Tolkien’s books and their movie counterparts, The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings. So go watch the movies or read the books to get yourself in the mood! amazingrace2015_logo Call for Volunteers!

We are proud to announce the Fourth Annual Amazing Race! It will be held on April 18th in Miyazaki City this year, so mark your calendars! (Please note that we originally had this planned for March, but have since changed the date to April!!)

The Amazing Race is an event based on the popular TV show (Japanese explanation here) of the same name. The yearly event was started by a group of ambitious JETs who came together to create an event that would combine the knowledge and intellect of both English and Japanese speakers by bringing together Japanese culture and a yearly theme. This year’s theme is still a secret (shhh! 😉 ), but past themes have been based on popular books, TV shows, and movies.

Dragon Boats – Game on!

September 5th Update: We’ve had a couple last-minute cancellations, so reservations for the races are open again! Please note that positions remain available on first-come, first-served basis, so don’t delay! We’ll also have a waiting line in case of other unexpected cancellations.

Every year, a rowdy bunch of Miyazakians invade Kagoshima for a boating weekend. Don’t run off to get your deck shoes; you won’t be needing those. Grab a costume instead!

That’s right, our boats are powered mostly by the power of our genki. Sure, we put our backs into it, but our costumes are what make the event tons of fun and truly memorable.

If you’ve ever rowed against a full team of burly Japanese firefighters who train in their spare time, you’ll know that a bunch of teachers is little to no match. Sure, we may not be able to beat them at their muscle-y game*, but none of them can beat the MAJET teams’ sheer genki power. Not one team!

We’re a bit slower than many of the others, but the crowds and the kids absolutely love our teams, and it’s always a special treat to be able to look a bit, say, silly, in another prefecture!

So pick a team, make your reservation, and get cracking on your team costumes, chants, and good vibes!
